Zeus on the Loose

A little more info on Zeus-
Eric and I have been talking for about 6 weeks on getting another dog and what kind. We narrowed it down to a cane corso (italian mastiff) or an english bulldog. The corso was a better fit for us and we started looking at puppies. Then last Thursday I came home and there was a little guy sitting on my couch asleep wearing antlers!!!! I'm super excited, but he does make me miss my beloved Fuji really bad. But, our other dog, a pit bull named Shy is already acting happier. She has been super mopey since fuji's been gone, and she and Zeus (what we named him) have been flopping around with eachother. Ill post pictures later, but he's 11 weeks old, blue brindle color and his eyes are grey colored. We are not cropping his ears. He's 19lbs, and has rancid toots. He'll be about 110-130lbs. We have him enrolled in puppy kindergarten starting next week because they have to be socialized A LOT because of their protective temperments.
Google Cane Corso to find out more info on the snuggly little guy. ;)

Functional Strength Training Winter Attempt #1

Gail at Gorilla Multisport sent me this great packet on Functional Strength Training for the triathlete last week. Tuesdays are late start work days for me, so I decided I would start it today.

I got on the treadmill and did a little warm up for 10 min at 9:52 mile/pace (FYI For some reason I just run WAY faster on a treadmill. This doesn't feel even CLOSE to warm up pace on the road). While I was running away one of the trainers, whom also works for me as a swim lesson instructor and water fit teacher came over and picked up my packet. He flipped through it, not seeming all that impressed (um, whatever, this is for triathletes, not body builders, duh). After I stretched and completed my 2 sets of 12 walking lunges with the med ball, he came back over and said something to the effect of Hey, why don't you let me put my personal twist on this. Fine, it's free personal training, so, whatev.

Some how, instead of finding myself happily doing 1-arm rows, I'm now standing on top of an upside down bosu ball, squatted, and doing 1-arm rows with the cable machine. The workout only progress to harder from there. V-twists with the med ball on top of a fit ball. Step ups and burpees, pushups on the fitball- that actually was directly from Gail's packet and was H-A-R-D. The push ups, planks, and tables, all mostly Gail's directive, but with Nate's "Don't be a pussy" speech.

I

Effing

Hurt.

I will continue on with the GMS Functional Strength Training, but, with out The Nate as I don't want to tear/hurt/harm anything, and this PT school student leaves town to get back to class shortly, allowing me to gradually work up to things as I should.

However, I see what a long way I have to go. But hey, it's still not even Official Training Season, right?

Things That Annoy, Irritate, and Bug the Eff Out of Me Part Duex

I once went on a rant about things that bother me. Now I'm back, with a few more.

  • Fitness professionals that aren't fit.
  • People that smoke on oxygen machines.
  • When someone says "I can't" when they should say "I won't try."
  • Jealous people.
  • The BMW's parked off of Gregory at houses worth half as much.
  • The word "asxe." As in, "Hey, I gotta question to asxe you."
  • The City of Blue Spring's inability to plow my street.
  • The lady that lives cate-corner to us.
  • That lady's kids.
  • Hair tie's and bandaids stuck in the pool gutter.
  • Most of the water buffalo.
  • Spam email. I DESPISE spam email.
  • Conference calls.
  • People that don't know what the hell they're talking about, and they're discussing MY field of expertise.
  • Bratty, obnoxious kids.
  • Their parents.
  • Snow on the road.
  • People that blow their second chances (or third, or fourth).
  • Nurses that smoke.
  • The economy. Amazingly, not gas prices! :)
  • The cost of new cars.
  • Economic bailouts.
  • W.

Hey, I must be in a decent mood. This is all I could come up with for now.

Feel free to leave a comment with your own.

Holiday Hammer Triathlon

So, I left everyone hanging on the details of my triathlon! :)
Well, it was a 500 lcm swim, 10 mile spin bike, and 5k treadmill run. Here are the results:
Courtney Staton 1st 20-29, 2nd Over All (Ha, I know, right!?)
Swim: 7:06.70 <--- Where I pulled this out from, I have no idea. It was a "go hard, then die" swim.
T1: 0:42.5
Bike: 18:47.40
T2: 0:22.02
Run: 31:50.93

Swim start Lane 3 First to the bikes! Me on the far end! :)
I thought I won the OA, but then a girl a heat behind me went 55:41. She's the spin instructor though, so she should have out biked me anyway, right?? :)

How Did I Enter a Triathlon in December?

Oh wow! New things! Yippee!

Yesterday my fancy new fluid trainer arrived via UPS along with my Mavic wireless cadence computer. I'm big time, I know. I set everything up in the basement once I got home from work last night. Alas, that wasn't until about 8:45pm, so I didn't get to assemble everything until after 10:30pm. But that's ok. Because that means tonight I have to get my ass on my bike and ride for a little while.

See, I really haven't been on my bike since um ::cough:: september ::cough:: and that was cough:: one time ::cough:: (Excuse me, can you pass a Ricola, please? Thanks). And we all know how much I've been running, or not running, as the case may be. Well, there's this little triathlon that I kinda entered in like, August. And it's This. Weekend. As in, Saturday, 8:00am. Yeah, it's indoors, so I'll be on a spin bike, and running on a treadmill, but still, I have to actually compete. I guess it will be a good place to determine my current fitness (um, none).

I'm off to look up a tv schedule for what's on this evening. Hopefully something worth spinning to.

These are a few of my favorite things...

This morning Shy dog and I went for a run. Well, Shy went for a run, and I held on for dear life. I think it's time to get her a harness, the collar just isn't cutting it. But, I digress.

The weather this morning was stunning. Not stinging, but stunning. There's still bits of snow on the ground, but I didn't feel like I was swallowing knives everytime I took a breath. The sunny was shinning, and I was alive.

It took about 40 minutes of hem-hawing around before I kicked my own ass out the door. I didn't plan to take the dog along, but she knew what I was doing and was bound to see herself going with me. Fine, she makes me run faster, anyway.

We jogged around a newer route and then came back to a familar home stretch. It was then I started thinking about the hardest runs and how they ended up being some of my favorite memories.

My first 10 mile run. Julie and I had a mapped out route through the plaza and brookside. It was the first weekend in January 2007. The temperatures were probably in the teens. Dawn started with us as well, but eventually it was Just Jules and I beebobbing along to our iPods and muffled footsteps on frozen pavement. The end of the run was one of my most triumphant.

Another favorite was the icicle run. The ice icile run was a 6 mile run on what was supposed to be chat, but was actually snowed and frozen ground. Oh, and it was in the middle of an ice storm. No really. MotoMichele and I layed claim to the wintry sights around us. It was so incredibly painful. When we made it back to her truck, we both found that our hair was frozen, and the snot inside our muffled up noses was as hard as a rock. Then we went to QuickTrip and loaded up on HotChocolate (that's a recovery drink, right?) and I had my first ever ClifBar.

I also loved my first 18 mile run in the summer with Julie along the same grounds as the icicle run, but this is winter, so we'll talk about that more in like, oh, July.

These runs are some of my favorite moments. I'm excited to find more this go-around.

I've also picked out a coach, but I haven't told them yet. And, RedMan registration opened today, and after a quick peek at the bank account, it looks like I'm hold off to probably Friday before I sign up. Thankfully it doesnt fill in seconds like every other Iron distance race does, so I have that option. Things are really going to be different this time training for IM. I cut up all the credit cards, so now I fly on the cash in my pocket, which means being a little more careful on how much cash I dump where and why.

But no matter what, I'm growing more excited...

My friends- I love them dearly.
My family- I love them even more.
The help someone got this year.
My husband- he's freaking awesome, mmkay?
My dog- she's super snuggly and sweet.
My bicycle and running shoes and the legs to make them work.
For getting the ax at the previous job and landing this one.
The small amount of money I have in the bank.
For God listening to my prayers each night.
My 2008 sponsors, particularly Trisports.com and Fluid Recovery.
My wedding being over! So much stress for nothing, really!
For everyone reading this blog.

But I Have to Pee!

There's a water main break not far from my work this afternoon, thus, we have no running water. I'm in the middle of a project and am meeting Andrea for drinks in less than 2 hrs. I don't want to leave early just to go pee, since I have so much to do... but but but.. I gotta go.
Or, I could take a lesson from this chick:

Because I'm Stupid, That's Why

Text to Julie, 10:30PM last night:
I just worked 10 hrs straight, did an hr long spin clss, got an hr break, & playd indoor sccr. U may have to come physically remov me from my bed in the am.

Julie's Response, 8:30AM today:
Are you alive!?

Me:
UUUgggh. Just got done swwwwimmming. Why why why did I let myself get so out of shape!?

Julie:
Because you are stupid, just like me. I did 3 miles outside last night, about died. But I did it!

...

Then this morning I got an email from the cycling guru who's spin class I'm taking. (Spin is very unsuggestive. It's actually 2hrs, twice a week of pure torture and hell fire. Just saying. The name of the class is "Kick My Ass" so, yeah). Anyway, the email basically said, you should be on your bike/trainer getting in base time because Januaury ain't fo' pussies. Perfect.

Oh, and we won our soccer game 5-4.

Breaking Up is Hard to Do

...and not getting a renewed contract hurts even worse.

So, unfortunately, I won't be renewing with Team Trisports.com in 2009. It's a huge bummer because I really love this company, and have tried super hard to promote them to the best of my ability. From what I understand they're doing some restructuring, and, they're trying to focus on AG'ers with fewer sponsors. I don't like it, but I will still purchase items from them, as they've been the best company to work with over my now three years in the sport. I really wish the company, it's staff, and it's athletes the best. I hope the members of the 2009 team know that they have something special and work it- work it really well. Who knows, maybe I'll be back in 2010.

Oh, one more thing- my coupon code is good through the end of the year, so use it now while it still works, it's big discounts for us both!

Wedding Vendor Review

Vendor Review:

Ceremony, Reception, and Rehearsal dinner site:
James P Davis Hall, Wyandotte County Lake KCK B

The site was super beautiful and was perfect for our themed wedding. However, the parks and rec department was difficult to work with, and the mandatory parks rangers “security” the night of the event were kind of jerks to my guests. Also, they told my mom that everything had to be mopped up and cleaned, so she and my DOC stayed and cleaned everything, instead of just cleaning off the tables and trash per the agreement. Later, the groundskeeper said they didn’t need to do any of that, but the rangers had already told them to. Also, I paid for the fireplaces to be lit, and they never were. It wasn’t a big deal since it was warm outside, but, I would have liked a refund immediately. The site itself is a jewel and I’m so happy to have found it. It was $200 cheaper by having a friend that lives in WyCo sign the rental agreement with me as well. The rehearsal rental cost was $100 (when booked a week in advance. Earlier than that and it’s full price.). For the rental from 8am to Midnight the day of the wedding the rental price was $400 plus a $200 deposit. ‘Couldn’t have found anything for that pricing elsewhere.

Flowers and Décor:
Artistic Flowers, Belton/Peculiar, MO C-

Pricing was good and my original meeting with the florist was great. The flowers at the wedding looked good, but the color wasn’t as bright in the bridesmaids lilies (they were a pale orange, instead of the vibrant color I wanted). My bouquet was exactly what I pictured, and the boutenierrs and corsages looked great. My issue: I tried to call to confirm our order six weeks out, and the phone numbers were disconnected, and the shop front was closed up! After many emails I finally got a response that he was now working out of his home and “forgot” to notify me. Very very unprofessional!! But, the florist, Don, did come thru on the wedding day.

Catering:
McGonigle’s Randy Ross, KCMO A
http://www.mcgonigles.com/

Inexpensive, easy to work with. Everything was just as it was supposed to be and they even provided linens. Super great job.

Cake:
Meg’s Lady Cakes, Lawrence, KS A
www.megsladycakes.com

Megan took my vision and put her own spin on it. It was exactly as I saw it. Good contruction, and flavors to DIE for. We had red velvet and spice cake. She did a phenomenal job.

Rentals:
Accent Rentals, KCMO B
www.accentrentals.com

They had a good product. Delivered and picked up on time, but I found it to be rather pricy when the overtime delivery was added in.

Music:
KC Discjockeys Inc C
http://kcdjforyou.com/

I had booked with Frank, and was told he personally would be doing the event. Then, I got a call from another dj two weeks before saying he was doing the event and wanted to go over our music selections. This was fine. We met and everything seemed ok. Then I got a call right before rehearsal saying he wouldn’t be there even though it was my understanding he would be. Ryan, our dj, also did the ceremony music. He had A LOT of issues with feedback during the ceremony and stopped the wedding party processional early, and our bm/moh pretty much walked down the aisle in silence. There was feedback during my bridal processional, and he stopped the song when it was supposed to be let played.

During the reception he kept coming up and asking me questions, when he was already given a timeline. I finally told him that he needed to talk to our DOC because I didn’t have answers and didn’t care. Basically, to leave me alone. The dance floor never really got moving- there would be a good song played, then a bad song that would clear the floor, and that repeated thru the evening. Whatever.

Photography/Videography:
Monika Herbert/ Trevor Hawkins A++
www.Monphotography.com

My favorites. Super affordable and wonder packages. Seriously, this duo (an engaged couple) did an AMAZING job. I can’t sing their praises enough. I’m excited to get all of the pictures back!

DOC:
Suzanne Arnold OCCASIONS Louisberg, KS A+

Suzanne took charge of everything rehearsal/ceremony/reception related the week of the wedding. She was awesome.

adopt a pit bull!

Hey guys, I'm in a conudrum. Because of reasons out of our hands, Eric and I need to find a home for Fuji, our 6 year old pit bull. He's tan and white, with a red nose and big floppy head. He's super sweet, loves to cuddle and play fetch. He knows basic comands, even "bang" (play dead). We'd prefer him to go to a previous pit bull owner, just because a bully breed owner understands the nuances of the breed. The one major stipulation is that he is the only dog in a family. He is probably related to Alf, so cats are a no-no too.
Fuji was house broke at an early age, and comes from a very high standard pedigree. We have not ever ordered his papers since we never bred him, but you can get those easily.
If you're interested, please email me immediately at triswimcoach@tmail.com.

Thank you!

I'm Alive

Even after everything, I'm alive. I keep looking for that rainbow and I think I can see it in the distance!! I've had a couple interviews in the last week, one they wanted to hire me, but the money was a j-o-k-e, the other I'll hear from shortly. They're wanting to start someone right after I get back from the honeymoon, so I think there's a good chance. Plus, it's actually a posistion I've been trying to get into for about 9 months now, so it would be pretty badass. :)

As for other details on what's bee bringing me down, I'm still not at liberty to discuss, but hopefully will be after tonight. ::sigh:: We're trying to get everything wrapped up, and I think that should happen this evening.

I'm finalizing everything for the wedding, and am growing more excited and anxious by the day. If it weren't for the baggage we're toting around right now I think Mr. Starfish and I would be floating in the clouds, so it's good we're still grounded.

Tuesday, October 7, 2008

From bad to worse.

First, I would like to say that Saturday night was great. I had a blast.

But, my trials and tribulations continue. Seriously, there's a couple things that have happened that I can't even discuss on here yet, but it's not good. Like, for real.

However, Eric's had some good stuff happen with the management company, which is nice, but right now I feel like the deck is really stacked against us, well, myself in particular.

While I can't explain everything, just please, keep me in your thoughts and prayers. I'm dealing with some heavy stuff and still trying to keep my head up and get pumped about the wedding.

I just can't wait to get to the honeymoon.

It's Pumpkin Season, Alright

I love fall. It's my favorite season. Every little corner has an old pickup truck selling pumpkins out of the bed. If I could, I'd buy a whole load. Not sure what I'd do with them. Maybe I could draw faces on them and talk to them like Tom Hanks and Wilson. I'm kind of missing the daily companionship of people. I think that's why I like the coffee shop. I don't have to talk to anyone, because really I don't like that at all, but I can converse if I really want to. I can't do that at home when Eric's not there. It's just me and dogs. Shy is a dog, and well, is still wearing a lampshade so I don't think she'd talk to me if she could. Fuji, along with being a dog and unable to speak in human would probably speak in a language I can't understand anway. Like, Mongolian or something.

Yesterday morning I got up and went for a jog- I say jog instead of run because it was just me lollygagging around the neighborhood. It was chilly out. I still got hot towards the end, but it was nice to just enjoy the morning and come home to some fresh brewed coffee.

I may do another run sometime this afternoon. It's been a really long time since I've been running on back to back days, but I really don't think it would hurt anything. Also, later today I'm making my jewelery to go with my super hot shoes I purchased for my bachlorette party. I got them at a steal too. So, here they are:

Cute, eh? I love girlie details so these are perfect.

Anyway, back to my j-o-b searching and coffee drinking.

Monday, September 29, 2008

UUUUUUUUUGGGGGHHHHH

Ok, I don't want to vent at anyone in particular, so I'm just going to vent to everyone. Ok, go grab your favorite coffee mug and pour a strong one. I need to list some stuff:

I don't have a job. I don't have any money, mostly due to lack of job. I am getting married in T-32 days. I feel like there's so much left to do. My mom has something going on that can't be avoided, so she won't be around much until the week of the wedding. My ShyShy dog is chewing the pads of her paws off. I'm going to have to get her one of those damn elizabethan collar things until her paws heal.

Those things do not look good on any dog, especially a pit bull. I broke my favorite flip flops while trying to carry said dog down stairs today. I had to clean her paws with peroxide solution to fight infection and she yelped and whined and cried and it made me feel like the worst dog mom EVER. I feel chubby. I am agravated with my hair and my skin. I feel like I have no direction because I have no job thus making me a worthless member in society. I'm nervous the weather is going to turn craptastic for the wedding.

Ok, so here's some good things, as I would like to remind myself that life isn't all that bad.
My bachlorette party is this weekend, and I have the best friends and bridesmaids in the universe. I have a super hot dress I'm going to wear, but first I have to figure out how to make a duct tape bra to hold up the girls since it's backless. Hoo-ah! We're going to hit up some good spots, and I'm excited to have a fun girls night. My MOH Alyson got us some rooms at a swanky near by hotel, so we just have stumble, er, walk back.
I'm currently sipping a creme-bru-le coffee at Scooter's. I got a free upgrade to the 20 oz. mmmmm. In six days I have driven a total of 41.8 miles. I even ran and walked to swim practice a couple times. I really enjoy that. The running is great exercise, but walking home from the pool saturday felt great. it's been a while since I've just gone on a Walk for transportation versus a run to nowhere. i think i might continue that on Saturdays. Run in the morning before practice, and stop at the pool. Swim, walk home.

Ok you're right. I'm feeling better already.

Redman Iron Distance 2009

Ok, so CornDog (my iron partner in crime for 2009) and I have decided on an ironman. It's not an Ironman event, per se, but it's an iron distance. There's a bunch of pros and cons for the event, especially for Corey, as this will be his first trist in the the land of all things Iron. Actually, this will be his first venture into the land of triathlon. No, RedMan won't be his first tri, believe me, Coach Corky will get him some experience. And it's not like he's a total newbie- he's one of *those* people. Those 100 mile rides for the helluvit and 12 mile runs in 100 minutes just because he can. Yeah, *one of those.*
Anyway, here's some of the cons:

-Not the big fancy schmancy hoorah of the Ironman Trademark events
-Not 2200 other athletes to keep you motivated
-Not somewhere exotic like Florida, or Cananada, or Cancun

Ok, I know there's more, but since I'm stoked about RedMan, I'm seeing all the pros:

-It's in Oklahoma City, which is driving distance, and not the drive all freaking day driving distance, but get up and leave in the morning, be there by the time check in opens driving distance
- After reviewing a few year's worth of results, I see that I could very possibly place top 3 in my age group, instead of 12 like at Florida last year
-The Cheapest entry fee for any Iron distance in North America, and you can enter up until like July, or something like that
-The race date. Late September is decent weather, and weather similar to what I will train in. This also means that my season won't last from April to November, unless I decide to do the ChiTown marathon or something else to that effect

So, there you have it.

RedMan, it is.

The Flower Guy's Alive!

Whew. Just got an email from the florist apologizing for not contacting me. Due to escalating overhead, he closed the store front, but still has his home studio and is doing events and weddings only now. That's fine with me!

Ok, so, I don't have to freak about that, at least!

I'm a PC, and I'm a Human Being

I saw this last night with Chrissy and FBJ while watching TV. FBJ is the big Mac Attack dude in our group. Chrissy and I love our PCs. So, we nearly pee'd ourselves when this came on.

Just Over a Month

About a month until I become a Mrs- Eight years in the making. Ahh! Today I'm working on wedding stuff, and I have encountered a minor problem.

I think my florist may have packed up and left shop. I keep calling and calling and the phone is disconnected. I just sent an email. While I don't expect an immediate response, it sure would calm my fears.

My little brother moved back to KC this week from Minneapolis and I'm making him do a drive by of their location to make sure there's still an open sign on the door. If so, they better call me! I freaking out, man.

HelloMoto

I got a call from Moto Michele in Maylasia yesterdayon her way to work (8am there, 7pm here). I just wanted to say to P&G that it was entirely work related for that hour and that it wasn't a personal phone call.
Just ya know, when she turns in that international calling charge. :)

Not So Happy Housewife

Well, I'm pretty certian the whole stay at home housewife thing isn't for me. I've officially been unemployed (well, underemployed if you count my 4 hrs a week coaching swimming) since Wednesday evening, and this is everything I have done in that amount of time:

Thursday- Sat at Scooter's Coffee shop for nearly 8.5 hrs using the internet to whore myself out-er- post my resumes and apply at several businesses.

Friday- Cleaned. No, really, like, scrubbed the grout in the bathrooms with Clorox and a tooth brush cleaned. Ran a couple earrands that I've been "too busy for." Then managed to realize that I actually missed my run because I waited too long for said earrand and the future in-laws were ariving momentarily.

Saturday- My fiance bestowed upon me the gift of a cold. We're really taking the "in sickness" part of our vows quite seriously. Coached at 7:30am, cleaned the car, had hair and make up trials for wedding done, visited the wedding venues with said FIL's (future in-laws). Then made my way to the most bitchin bridal shower ever. I love my friends and family, I seriously think I have the most fabulous bridesmaids in the world. Came home, drank wine, passed out from a wine/sudafed OD on the couch.
Here's all the great ladies from the shower! My mom is on my left, and my grandma is directly above my right shoulder.

Sunday- made breakfast, saw the FIL's off. Slept on kitchen floor, because it's cold, with the girl dog. Finally got up about 5:30 with Fi (fiance, see look, there's tons of fun wedding acronyms and abbreviations). We put on our running shoes, but within minutes made it a sickness induced walk. We held hands the whole time and looked at the brandnew fancy houses in our neighborhod. They're 300k, but I like our little house better. We came home and went to sleep.

Finally, Monday, today, I woke up and coached, came home and slept again, and ::gasp:: didn't have to get up and leave for work at 6:30am. That was nice and all, but I spent an hr talking to FI about my dcreased feelings of self worth because I lost my job. Very sweetly he told me "You're not worthhhlesss." Aww. Then I made beds (we didn't sleep together because he's afraid to contract my sickness as he's getting over his), made breaky, cleaned, cleaned, and disinfected. Played with the dogs, and did some more job searching. Thus, you find me here, parked on the floor of FI's boat shop, bumming the wireless and doing well, nothing.

I don't think the stay at home housewife thing is going to be for me. All that cleaning, and getting up whenever. Um, I'm a schedule girl. Consistency is my friend.

I'm thinking tomorrow morning, however, I may be feeling up to a little run, if I don't wake up gagging on my phlem.. and the rest of you will be heading to work. Ha! Maybe I'll just jog into somewhere with a stack of resumes.

The Martini Mile "Recap"

So the Martini Mile it was, yesterday. Well, the Martini .67 Mile. Close enough.

Alyson and I ran somewhere near the 5:34 mark. Obviously this was not a full mile.

However, it works out to about an 8:18 pace, which would be pretty darn fast for me.

Afterwards, we enjoyed burrito bowls from Chipotle and a Pacifico. Yum.

OMC Triathlon Turned Splash and Dash

Not much to report here. Triathlon was modified into a swim/run because of standing water on the bike course. Dang. (Can't you tell I'm heartbroken?)

I forgot to mark "opening heat" on my swim time, so I had to start in my age group, and nearly 30 min after the first wave- now in a full on down pour of rain. That was fine though, there wasn't too terribly much traffic left in the water. The swim is a big triangle with bouys every 10 meters. The best part? They were roped together so it was like having a lane line on my left side. Perfect. I felt really good, considering I've swam 3 times since the KC Women's Tri.

Pro legend Karen Smyers swam a 7:13. I went 8:40 and there was a handful of girls between us. Yes, I just sort of compared myself to Karen Smyers. Don't worry, it won't happen again.

My TA was fast, 39 seconds. I think that was like the 3rd fastest.

As soon as I hit the run course I was thankful for my super light Zoot Ultra race flats. They absorbed nearly no water. That's good when running close to 3 miles in ankle deep water. Seriously. There were portions of the course where the water was up To. My. Ankles. The course was a little hillier than I had expected...

But it was FUN!!! Also, I saw Glenn dressed as a cheerleader, and Tim as Super girl. Ah, gotta love those all women's races. I told them both that I should probably train more. Tim said "No Training, just race." HA.

Meanwhile, three girls that I know I can out bike consistently passed me running. Oh well, it was still a blast.

My finish time was 37:34, good enough for 6th place in my largest AG group of the year. 20-24, for the first time I've seen, was actually one of the biggest AG's. How great!

Now, photos for your enjoyment.

PS

Tim, PLEASE tell me that outfit is really your sister's. I gotta say, I think Trish would look a tad bit better in it.

Persuing the dream, again?

So I totally missed the boat on my run last night. Now I'm super pissed with myself because it was A.MAZ.ING. outside. Instead, I picked up the house a bit and sat around watching "Million Dollar Listing" and "Wipeout" on tv. Nothing like a little ridiculous reality TV to remind you of what a fat, lazy turd you've become. Why is that? Because, my brain actually melted even more while watching the mushroom head kid make more money in a day than I make in 6 months. Oh, and hearing about how people jumping over big rubber balls is the biggest accomplishment in their lives made me ill. Or maybe that was the bacon hamburger pizza?

At any rate, the fiance and I had a bit of "discussion" on how I'm wanting to do Ironman again next year. He doesn't like it. Not. One. Bit.

I was pretty much absent from 4:45am until dinner about 8:45pm Monday-Friday. Saturday mornings were coaching days, and long runs. Sundays, were rides.

I kind of cleaned. I didn't watch TV. I lost a couple friends. I was tired. Too tired. For everything.

I took Monday's off. And I never missed a dinner. Ok, only a few. I had some miserable days. Ok, some really really bad days. And even worse workouts.

Looking back, this the happiest I have been in years. I want to relieve it. Again and again. I hope I can convince the hubby-to-be to let me persue it, and that my sacrifices, and many of his, were all worth it.

LET ME OUT!

Why must I be a slave to the Man on such a glorious GLORIOUS DAY!?? And tomorrow, too!?
Tonight, a run. I'm supposed to go to the track. Instead, I'll head on down the ADP path for my own enjoyment. I'll assume the trails are a soupy muddy mess from the days of rain, and not one for me to mess with.
My original plan for the day would have me running right now. Viewing the lunch-timers washing their cars and the retirees mowing their perfectly manicured Johnson Co. lawns. It would be a perfect little escape from that of my cubicle hell.
I was running late and didn't have time to prepare my gear. UGH!
Instead, I remain, writhing around, unable to sit still, not caring for my tasks at hand (Damn the Man!), and staring blankly out the window and the crystal blue sky. Far below me I can spot runners doing what I wish I were.
But tonight, I will run!

Full Circle

I keep feeling that I wasted this year. Yeah, I did some big races. Wildflower, Kansas 70.3, BSLT 70.3. But, I just “did” them. They weren’t what I wanted. Not what I planned. I’m feeling short of my goals.

In January I was talking to The Comeback Kid about training with her. Learning to run like her. Be lean like her. But I didn’t. It was all talk. The Comeback Kid, however, has adapted to her name, and still has some remainder of the season left in her.

I wanted to go to Wildflower, and come back with a top 20. Pssh. Not even close. I Could. Not. Hang. With those girls. I’d say maybe next year, but I’m thinking that if I want to bust out an early season (very early for Missouri) half or even Olympic, I need to put some serious thought in the winter training.

I went to Kansas having done the training. I didn’t train to race. I trained to finish. Instead, I got caught in the hypothetical thunderstorm and was forced and early finish making it at 67.3 or whatever. Lame, I know.

Then Texas. Buffalo, actually, was a decent race. It was cold, it was rainy, but it was decent. I did win my division, but it’s not much to champion. No disrespect to any of the other gals, but, there wasn’t any real competition to speak of. I did however, have a great bonding trip with my dad, which I plan to repeat next year (September in Oklahoma, eh, Pops?).

This weekend I finish out my lackluster season. I would like to say that I’m going to come out swinging. Instead, I think I’m going to come out and enjoy myself.

I had planned to do the KC Marathon in late October. Guess what else is in late October? My wedding. I just couldn’t swing the training and the stress of it all, even thinking the runs would be my escape from the world, they became another hassle. At this point I may or may not show up for the Half. But don’t count on it.

Right now I’m pondering next year’s season. I’m sold 100% on Ironman Arizona- as long as they’ll let me in. I’ll have a new partner in crime, Corn Dizzle, making his way into the triathlon scene- he’s a professional athlete in his own right- a motocross racer that’s raced his dirt bike from coast to coast. I’ll have a tune up half- hopefully Redman with will play host to HalfMax in 2008 (USAT’s National Half Distance Championships). Maybe even KS 70.3 with the revise course in June.

Maybe this year wasn’t a total waste. More of a rebuilding year, eh? This is only my third season in the sport and I hope for 40 more. I think I need to let go of certain things for now- I’m not an overall contender, I’m not a short course speedster. However, I am in love with the sport. I am a triathlete, and I am, forever, an Ironman.

The Best (triathlon) Thing I've Heard This Year!

August 27, 2008
2009 USA Triathlon TriSports.com Halfmax National Championship

Important 2009 Halfmax Championship Announcement
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — USA Triathlon and Ultramax Events is pleased to announce that the Redman Triathlon in Oklahoma City, Okla., will serve as the second of a new three city rotational structure for the USA Triathlon Halfmax National Championship. The Redman Triathlon will host the 2009 USA Triathlon Trisports.com Halfmax National Championship and USA Triathlon Club National Championship.
The Pumpkinman Triathlon will kick off the new rotational structure and will host the 2008 championship near Las Vegas on Oct. 18. The final leg of the Halfmax rotation will be the 2010 Championship. The venue and race date will be announced early next season.
“This is an exciting event. Not only will we be able to crown our Long Course Triathlon National Championships, but we will also be crowning our Club National Champions,” said USAT National Events Director Jeff Dyrek. “Athletes of all experience levels will have the opportunity to contribute to their club’s scoring whether it be the sprint, intermediate or long course distance event. Clubs will be able to bring athletes of all experience levels to compete.”
The Trisports.com Halfmax National Championship is entering its fourth year and is supported by a network of qualifying events that span the entire nation. Beginning in 2008, only athletes who qualify for the Halfmax Championship will be eligible to compete for the coveted world championship slots. Each year the Halfmax Championship attracts the very best long course age group athletes from across the nation. The Halfmax venue rotation will give athletes across the nation better access to the Halfmax Championship and Club Championships. This new 3-year rotation makes it easier for athletes to plan from year-to-year.
The Halfmax Long Course National Championship features a 1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike and 13.1 mile run.
“Ultramax is very excited to add the Redman Triathlon to our three city rotation plan. The new rotation design will deliver the Halfmax Championship concept to the entire nation. This expansion will build upon our very successful move to the Pumpkinman Triathlon in Las Vegas. Our master plan is to return to each city every three years,” said Ultramax Events Owner, Mark Livesay.
The 2008 and 2009 Halfmax Championships will produce a minimum of 10 slots per age group for Team USA and the 2009 and 2010 Long Course Triathlon World Championship.
“We are excited to be working with the Redman Triathlon group,” Dyrek said. “With their good reputation and completion of USAT’s Race Director Certification course, we are confident that athletes will experience a top-notch event.”

New Ultramax Alliance Expands Multi-sport in the Kansas City Area
A New Alliance Expands Multi-sport in the Kansas City AreaThe Kansas City Multi-Sport Revolution Has Begun

Wednesday, August 27, 2008 - Ultramax Events and Sherpa Sports announced today that they will join forces and deliver one, possibly two new exciting triathlon events to the Kansas City area. This new alliance sets a grand stage for the expansion of multi-sport in the Kansas City Area.

In 2008, Ultramax was hired by Sherpa Sports to provide timing services for the new Ironman Kansas 70.3 Triathlon event. This event was a huge success and served as a wonderful introduction for the two event groups. They are planning to build upon this new friendship and multi-sport momentum. The two groups are 100% focused and committed to delivering a total event experience.

Ultramax has a history of delivering some of nations best events. Over the past ten years Ultramax has directed five USA Triathlon National Championships, including two USAT National Age Group Championships. Ultramax has produced several marquee events including the popular Race for Sight Triathlon, Octomax and Quartermax Triathlons, and the USA Triathlon Trisports.com Halfmax National Championship.

“Kansas City has one of the largest and most dynamic triathlete populations in the state. Ultramax is so excited to get back to Kansas City. We are looking forward to delivering another event in full Ultramax style. We sincerely hope the triathlete community is as excited about this partnership announcement as we are,” said Ultramax owner, Mark Livesay.

To kick things off we will be hosting a town hall style meeting. Athlete feedback is very important to us and we want to hear what you want from this Kansas City event. We want to bring the triathlon clubs, venues, sponsors and the general public together in one place to get feedback and response. We feel this is vital to the planning of any successful event and a perfect way to introduce our new alliance to the Kansas City area.

"Sherpa Sports is thrilled to merge with Ultramax in bringing multisport excellence back to Kansas City. The Kansas City area has a history of passionate triathletes and supporters, and we are eager to fuel that energy," said Sherpa Sports President, Ryan Robinson.

Together we are planning to build an event that the local area athletes, venues and sponsors will be proud to be part of. The date, format and location of this inaugural meeting will be forthcoming.
If you are interested in participating, please drop us a note and we will add you to the invitation list.

Reproducing Should Be Forbidden for These People
New game enemy takes a solid day to defeat
Players pass out, get sick during extreme battle.
By Ben Silverman
If it's good enough for Cartman, it's good enough for Square-Enix.
The developers of the online role-playing game Final Fantasy XI seemingly borrowed a page from the Emmy-winning South Park episode "Make Love, Not Warcraft" by updating the game with one of the longest - and most physically grueling - video game fights ever. Introduced in the game's latest downloadable update, the boss monster "Pandemonium Warden" remained perfectly fit after a group of high-level adventurers wailed away at it nonstop for over 18 hours straight.

FINAL FANTASY XI SCREENS

Though the seemingly unbeatable boss will not prevent people from 'completing' the game -- persistent online games typically do not "end" like most single-player games -- it has sparked debate over what exactly the game's developers, Square-Enix, expect out of their devoted fan base. Message boards have lit up with disgruntled players calling out the company for failing to respect its very own in-game warning telling players they have "no desire to see your real life suffer as a consequence [of playing]. Don't forget your friends, your family, your school or your work."
Easy for them to say. While the beast continually healed, the gamers weren't so lucky.
"People were passing out and getting physically ill," leaders of the player guild said in a forum post. "We decided to end it before we risked turning into a horrible news story about how video games ruin people's lives."
Too late.

Bloggy Bloggerton

I’m alive. I just haven’t been so into blogging. My friend Andrea puts it well- we’re just over the blogging thing for the summer.

So, in a fairly quick recap of the last five days or so, this is what I’ve been up to:

Thursday was wedding crap day- Eric and I finalized and purchased our wedding bands. Holy cow! We’re really getting married. … who wants to take a bet on how long it will take before Eric loses his? He NEVER wears watches, rings, etc, so I’ll be impressed if he keeps this one on.

Eric was gone for Millville Friday, and got home LATE Sunday night, which left me with the house to myself (Both good and bad). Saturday morning I got up and coached, came home, then met my brother Jeffie for breakfast. He’s all grown up! Yep, Jeff MOVED. Sadly, it wasn’t just out of my folk’s house, but clear to Minnesota! Yeah, I know, right!?

After breakfast I stopped by the shop, visited Smashley and rolled on home. I decided that I HAD to get in a run, and a decent one, at least. So, about noon I cruised to the Lake Jacomo trails. I’ve only done a very short run thru here once, so it was a new experience.

I really love these trails! I wish they were more single track like Shawnee Mission, but they’re a chat gravel, with some washout. It’s mostly all shaded and there’s varying degrees of terrain and elevation changes- even a couple creek crossings (I guess they’re dry unless it recently rained). I ran for right at 60 min, and I didn’t see another soul for the first 40! But, I still felt pretty safe. I would suggest though, that like any trail running, keep your music to a minimum or just turn it off.

After my run and some errands, I came home for Olympic watching. The evening was a blast- Chief’s game, Julie’s 30th Birthday Party. But, I kept myself under control- I was the DD and had an early morning swim.

Sunday I met up with the other open water swimmers about 6:15am at Lakewood. The air was chilly and there was layers of fog rolling off the water. My favorite! The sunrise was perfect and it was an awesome start to the day.

I came home, tidied up a bit, chatted with the future mother in law, and decided to “take a quick nap” about 11:30am. I woke up at 5:45pm. WOW, guess I was tired! I enjoyed the rest of the evening by watching more Olympics coverage, yet somehow managed to miss the women’s triathlon. Ugh!

Monday I came home from work for my bike ride. It was beautiful out, but I still couldn’t pry myself from the Olympics! So, I set up the trainer to ride 25 hypothetical miles. It was quick RPM spinning, 15 min “easy” and 5 min “Hard!!.” I was spent.

Last night I found myself at the track attempting speed work for the first time in weeks. Ah, a main set of 6x 800 repeats. Oops! I only did 4! For some reason I was thinking it was only 4, so I owe myself 2 more. Dang! Altogether I was please with my effort level and splits, but I have yet to compare them to other workouts.

Well, I better get back to worky jerky.

PS

Lolo Jones, my heart goes out to you, girl!

KC Women's Tri Recap
**
KC Women’s Tri Recap
August 9, 2008

I’m going to make this really short (well, ok, short in terms of my usual recaps):

The swim went decent- actually, it’s my fastest swim split there, yet, but I didn’t think it was that fantastic. I started in seventh and got out of the water in fifth I think.

The bike was pretty much a disaster. I added nearly 3 minutes in a 10 mile race. I suppose that’s what I get for not being on the bike. I’m taking care of that starting a couple days ago. My legs felt slow and heavy. I was concerned when I was warming up, but told myself that I was just going to have to push like hell and suck it up come race time. I for sure pushed as hard as I could, even barfed up some Heed (Gross! Stop serving that!!) that I had prior to the race start. It was difficult getting pass by so many women- probably 10 in all, maybe more. On the bike last year not one lady passed me and I chased my way down to second. I can tell this is definitely a different year.

I was so thankful to be off that bike.

The run started out good. I tried to go and shake things out a bit, and stay relaxed, but I had such a sense of urgency in trying to get back to the front. It didn’t work. Bummer. I actually felt decent though, and even with my craptacular bike, my run was just barely off from last year, which I was pleased about. My new running stride is definitely more efficient.

Altogether, I added almost two minutes to my time, which is a decent amount in a sprint race. I ended up in fifth, which was a disappointment, but I rather expected it.

The highlight of the day was watching two of my bridesmaids finish their first triathlon! Jennifer and Alyson did the race and both did awesome. I got tears in my eyes cheering for them. J

I was so pumped to see Jennifer on the bike and I knew she would finish. When I passed both Alyson and Jennifer on the run, they were smiling and looked great. Good job girls!

Alas, that was Expected
The WIN for KC race went about as well as could be expected. Meaning: not so hot. However- I did drop some time on my swim, which was a pleasant surprise. My legs were dead from the start on the bike. I bet I lost 15 watts in the last month. I was WEAK WEAK on the bike, something that's usually a strong suit, especially at this race last year. :( ugh. Oh well, I'm back on the wagon (starting tomorrow), with one race to go for the season. My run was decent. It hurt like hell but was only one minute slower. All told I added just over 4 minutes to last year's time. I'll post a full recap later- I'm busy here at work. But I'd like to say that Clay Meyers-Bowman, the race director, put on another awesome event. There was a record turnout. The weather held up perfect, unlike other areas of KC. Both Jennifer and Alyson finished their first triathlon- bringing tears to my eyes! I'm so proud!!Andrea V kicked ass (and mine. bad.), as did Jane L. and Dawn Mc., Jean and Leslie C. Great job gals. Leslie walked away with the overall and I'm working on getting her to join forces with me in the Flames suit. :o) I even met a couple new people and worked those networking skills. I'm super stoked that the race turned out awesome and congrats to all the new first time triathletes!

Crap crap crap.
AHH.

So, it just kind of hit me. I'm going into this race this weekend the most unprepared I have been for any race. Ever. At this point I'm just relying on my experience to hopefully let me finish in the top 3 in my AG, although, at this point, I'm not sure if that's possible.
In the past week since the ceiling leak debacle, Eric and I, with the help of our friend Corey, have stained, stripped, and began restaining our rather LARGE (full back of house) deck and railings.
Also, I've completed several wedding tasks that seem to take up a helluva lot more time than I thought. Tonight we're supposed to hit up the jewlers to purchase our wedding bands, but, well, between what's left to be done at the house, and the maintinence I've been putting off on my bike (since last week), something's gotta give.
Tonight, I will probably get on my bike. I'm not sure which is going to be worse- my bike or my run. So, I figure, I should spin the legs out and deal with it best I can.
I've put on 5 lbs since my race weight for time race last year, but that's fine. I'm sure though that it will adversely affect me in the bike, and not at all in the swim.
Speaking of the swim, I've actually been in the water several times in the last few weeks, making the majority of those workouts. That's something, right?
No the hard part: How, when I get to the race, will I manage to refrain from mentally beating myself up when I suffer? Because suffer, I will. It won't be the tired suffering from this early summer with back-to-back halfs, yet, it will be the type of suffer you feel when you heart and lungs want to explode and your head pounds every time you blink. For that, my friends, is a sprint triathlon. Suffice to say, speedwork hasn't really happened, so basically, I'm going to go out and punnish my self for my lack of training.
Suck it up and deal, eh?
For shiits and grins, here's my last two years results:

2006: AG 5/11, OA 84/265
Splits: 9:05 500 meter swim/ 1:49 t1/ 32:11 10 mile bike/ 1:17 t2/ 35:18 5k run = 1:19.28
2007: AG 3/25?, OA 23/400?
Splits: 8:58/ 1:11/ 30:50/ 00:35/ 32:54 = 1:14.28

Orginally I had a goal to go under 1:10. Trying not to sandbag in my goals, yet be honest with myself, I think a 1:15 should be my goal. However, this race filled to capactity this year, meaning there will be over 500 gals racing. It will probably take a 1:10 or under to podium in my AG, but maybe I'll catch a lucky break, and maybe, by the gace of God, will my body all of a sudden go fast.
One thing's certain: It's gonna hurt.
